Sunday, 3:00 am

Blade Birkwell’s phone was harder to retrieve. He slept with it under his pillow. And his wife’s hand lie atop his pillow.

Vic, the golden retriever slept on the foot of the bed. Blade’s wife suspected the affair. At least, Lily guessed that was the case. Wonder if Blade took the phone in the bathroom. Blade was a smart man. If he called his mistress on that phone, he kept it with him at all times. Or he carried two phones.

“Anna, you work on the phone. I’ll see if I can find the disk.”

“He wouldn’t keep it here,” Anna said. “Too big a chance his wife would find it. The blackmailer wouldn’t send it here either. If Mrs. Birkwell found it first, there’d be no chance for blackmail.”

Anna had a good point. So where would he keep it? A safe deposit box.

“Anna, you’re right. You get the phone. I’ll look for a record of a safe deposit box in his office.

“Oh, no, you don’t. I’m going to need your help.” Somehow she knew that would be Anna’s answer. They needed to hurry. In about two hours the fishermen would paddle out to their favorite fishing holes, and one of them would find Lizzie’s body. The thought of anyone finding her dead was just too much.

“What do you need me to do?”

“Just a second. Let me get into position.” Anna positioned herself next to Blade’s pillow. “Okay, Lily. You push his wife’s arm down on the other side of the pillow. I’ll slip the phone out when the pressure changes.”

Blade turned his head in the direction of his wife. His nose was in her hand. He sneezed.

His wife apparently still asleep wiped her hand on Blade’s face.

Yuck! Did she do that on purpose? Probably.

“On three,” Anna said. “One, two, three.” Just as Lily was about to push, Vic leaped from the foot of the bed between his family and put his head on the pillow.

“Nice doggie,” Lily said. “You need to help us, help Blade.”

He laid his head on his paw.

“Vic, moved toward Mrs. Birkwell.”

Vic shook his head.

Anna tried to nudge him. Vic was too big to nudge.

“Please, Vic,” Anna said.

Vic looked up with his big eyes.

Anna nudged Blade. Blade nuzzled Vic with his nose.

Mrs. Birkwell patted Vic’s head. Vic leaned toward Mrs. Birkwell.

Anna slipped the phone out from under the pillow. “Thank you, Vic. We’ll take good care of it.”

Vic gave a little bark.
